How Many Steps Is 5 km?

The answer depends on your stride — but here's a surprisingly good estimate.

👟 Easy · 4 min

There is no exact conversion. A useful middle estimate is about 6,500 steps, and a lot of adults land somewhere between 6,000 and 7,500. A shorter step means more steps for the same 5 km.

If you want one number to remember, about 1,300 steps per kilometre gets you to 6,500. Treat it as a sketch, then check it against your own walk.

Why your number will be a little different

A step counter is counting footfalls, not metres. The same 5 km can land higher or lower depending on a few ordinary things:

  • Step length. Shorter steps cover less ground, so the count goes up. Longer steps do the opposite.
  • Pace. Walking faster often stretches each step a little.
  • The route. Hills, crowds, traffic lights, and a wandering park path are not a treadmill.
  • The device. A phone in a bag and a watch on a wrist can land on different numbers. That is normal.

The arithmetic is simple: 5,000 metres divided by the length of one step.

  • Shorter step, about 0.67 m: closer to 7,500 steps
  • Middle step, about 0.75 m: closer to 6,700 steps
  • Longer step, about 0.80 m: closer to 6,300 steps

These are examples, not a measurement of your walk. The popular “2,000 steps in a mile” shortcut is the same kind of estimate. 5 km is 3.1 miles, which comes out near 6,200 steps if that shortcut happens to fit you. Close enough to be useful. Not close enough to argue about.

How long 5 km of walking takes

Time follows pace, not a fixed clock. The NHS describes a brisk walk as about 3 miles an hour — faster than a stroll, slow enough that you can still talk. At that pace, 5 km takes about an hour.

A comfortable walk is often closer to 60–75 minutes. A slower stroll can take 80 minutes or more. You do not have to do it as one loop.

A commute, a lunch wander, and the long way home can add up to the same distance. If you care more about the clock than the kilometres, walking 10,000 steps usually takes about 90–120 minutes of actual walking.

Find your own 5 km

  1. Walk a route you know is about 5 km, or go for roughly an hour at a comfortable pace.
  2. Note the step count at the start and at the end.
  3. Divide the steps by 5. That is your personal steps-per-kilometre.
  4. Use that number next time, instead of a stranger’s average.

Once you know your own figure, this question gets boring in the best way. The answer is already in your pocket.

If 6,500 steps feels like a lot on your own, it gets lighter with company. Start a walking streak with friends and the distance stops being a solo math problem.
