Walking After the Clocks Go Back: Keep Your Daily Walk When It Gets Dark Early

The clocks go back and the after-work walk lands in the dark. Move it, light it, or shrink it to ten minutes.

🌙 Darker evenings · 👯 Better with friends · 5 min

The clocks go back on the last Sunday in October in the UK and the first Sunday in November in the US, and the after-work walk suddenly happens in the dark. The walk survives if you do one of three things: move it into daylight, make the evening version visible, or shrink it to a minimum that still counts.

The dates, then the habit

In the UK the clocks go back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October, and the country returns to Greenwich Mean Time. GOV.UK lists the date for the current year, and the date the clocks go forward again. British Summer Time is the stretch with more daylight in the evenings and less in the mornings. When the clocks go back, that flips.

In the United States, NIST says daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. At 2 a.m. the local time becomes 1 a.m., and that hour repeats. The return to standard time moves one hour of daylight from the evening to the morning. Daylight saving time begins again at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March. The evening light goes an hour earlier overnight.

Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time, and most of Arizona does not either. The exception NIST names is the Navajo Nation, which does.

Pick a slot

Morning, lunch, or the evening walk you already take. Choose one before the week fills up.

Morning uses the hour the change hands back. That autumn switch moves an hour of daylight from the evening to the morning, so a loop before work is the one that gets lighter. Try it the first Monday after the change, before the school bags and the first messages. One morning tells you whether the slot fits.

Lunch is the walk that stays in daylight through the short months. A lap of the block, or the long way to a sandwich, still sits in the middle of the day after that one-hour shift. If the morning is already claimed and the trip home is dark, put lunch on the calendar the way you would a meeting you meant to keep.

The evening walk can stay where it is. Same streets, same time after work, with the visibility habits below. In the first weeks, leaving a little earlier still catches some of the light from before the clocks moved. Later, the same loop is after dark. Say which slot you mean, because the sofa negotiates very well once the streetlights are on.

Make the evening walk visible

In poor daylight, Highway Code Rule 3 says wear or carry something light-coloured, bright, or fluorescent, and when it is dark, use reflective materials (an armband, a sash, a waistcoat, a jacket, or footwear), which drivers using headlights can see up to three times as far away as non-reflective ones. On a UK road with no pavement, Rule 2 says keep to the right-hand side so you can see oncoming traffic, be prepared to walk in single file, especially on a narrow road or in poor light, and keep close to the side. NHTSA says use a sidewalk whenever there is one, and if there isn't, face traffic and stay as far from it as you can. Cross at a crosswalk or an intersection, not mid-block. If neither is there, pick a well-lit place with the best view of traffic, wait for a gap, and keep watching as you cross. NHTSA also tells drivers that pedestrians are harder to see at night and may appear suddenly.

Keep a ten-minute minimum

The NHS says a brisk 10-minute daily walk counts toward the 150 minutes of weekly exercise in the physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64. On the worst wet dark Tuesday, those ten minutes still count, and they keep a streak alive. Any of the three slots qualifies.

When the evening is kinder, take a full half hour. How many steps that adds up to depends on your pace. Ten minutes is the promise that keeps a bad day on the board.

Let the group hold the dark months

Two to six friends. Pin one rule: a walk counts if it is ten minutes, any time of day. Check in once a day with a photo, a step count, or a single "done." A walking streak with friends is that shape: a small group, a floor people can hit, and a check-in on a quiet Tuesday.

If you use BuzzBuzz, the group is a hive: a few friends, a daily step count, and one photo. A group chat you already have can hold the same check-in.

The first person out after dark posts a streetlight photo. Or pick one lunch a week and walk it together. The 10,000-step Halloween challenge is the one-night version, for Halloween week. This rule is for the months after the pumpkins come down.

Pick your slot before the clocks change. Send the group one line: morning, lunch, or the evening loop with something a headlight can find. Then take the ten minutes on the first gloomy day, while the rule is still new.
